Gaudiness is next to Godliness : Miley and the Jupiter-Venus crew

We have all seen it and are likely already sick/bored of it so I won't belabor the issue. But what's up with the astrological signs behind Miley Cyruss and the MVA awards thing? What's up with bad taste and the distorted area of life between beauty and the gaudy?

Jupiter Square or Opposite Venus are seen in gaudy ostentatiousness and excess that is often referred to as "bad taste" or an appearance of beauty that is "large and in charge".  Sometimes it doesn't know it's crossing a line and often it doesn't care. Not because it is transgressive but out of love. It just loves those bedazzled denim pants, pirate shirt and American flag painter's cap.

Jupiter is the planet of "going overboard" and represents abundance to the point of excess. Venus is beauty and social activity to the point of ostentatiousness. Together they tend to define gaudy and indiscriminate, as you shall see. Bright colors, luxurious fabrics, feathers and fur are often seen with Jupiter-Venus combo. Like the bright plumage on the peacock, this combination is hard to miss and almost as hard as it is to look away.

When you thrown in Uranus, into the mix, as is the case with Miley, things get especially crazy. Unlike the basic Jupiter-Venus combo there is a willful disregard for other people's sense of decency and taste. "It's our party and we can do what we want to" sings Miley in her VMA award performance. It's very unlikely that she has any feelings of regret for doing just what she wants whenever she wants, however she wants, with whatever fleshtone plastic bikini she wants. I doubt very much she isn't aware of the publics reaction. Not that she doesn't care but that she enjoys shaking things up.

Jupiter is also about morality and philosophy and as we shall see the notions of taste, decency, morality and philosophy are intimately tied to this whole phenomenon. People often forget this expecting Jupiter to bring only wealth and prosperity.

It is said that transits "trigger' events that can be seen natal chart. If you are going to have an outburst of poor taste then it's gotta be reflected in the natal chart somewhere. This was certainly the case with Miley's Performance which was during transiting Jupiter's Opposition to her natal Venus.  No only did she go all-out and over-the-top but also received criticism and much of that Jupiter-moralizing and intellectual hand-wringing has been made over this.

She is hardly the first celebrity or artist to cross the lines of 'good taste' and decency.

Dolly Pardon also has the Jupiter-Venus square and has a history of veering close to the edge of public decency and poor taste despite having a loyal fan base. Here we can see both Miley and Dolly in brightly colored rainbow outfits making dramatic gestures with their faces. Dolly gets a pass on the criticism perhaps because she has certain sweetness to her which may seem missing with Miley and her tomboy roughness that comes with the Uranus addition to her Venus-Jupiter combination. Dolly is also a music legend who has sold an estimated 100 million records. So, there's that. A lot of rainbows and american flags in this dimension of bedazzlement.

Elton John, has the Trifecta of Jupiter-Venus-Uranus is outdone by none in terms of outlandish and cartoonish costumes. Coming just as close is Liberace who pioneered the garish, sequined look popularized by Elton John and the glam rock that followed in the late 70's. Liberace has Jupiter-Venus conjunction along with powerful Pluto and is electrified with a Trine from Uranus. The trine is less trouble-making and lawless. Pluto brings intensity and manipulation in his personal love-life.  I think his socks are probably sequined in this picture. Both Elton and Liberace were known for being big spenders and gift-givers, another Jupiter-Venus theme.

Gary Glitter and Jimmy Savile both have Jupiter Square Venus in the natal chart and both were not only gaudy and garish, glam-rock personalities but also convicted sex offenders. In greek myth Jupiter was a serial rapist and dead-beat dad. Saville was the worst of the two and his whole bug-eyed, cigar sucking face is enough to reach high levels on the creep-o-meeter. Sevile has Jupiter square his Venus-Mars opposition in his birth chart  and both Venus and Mars are in detriment of Scorpio and Taurus respectively. It's when planets in detriment square or oppose other planets in detriment that things get really bad. Jupiter came in and exaggerated the combination to criminal degrees. Ugh.

Sean Connery starring in Zardoz in this picture. Sean has Jupiter-Venus square although he doesn't show it off like some of our other examples and probably listens to his stylists. John Boorman, the writer-director-producer of the film also has Jupiter and Uranus aspecting his natal Venus although they are quite far apart from one another. During the filming of Zardoz transiting Uranus and Jupiter both aspect his progressed Venus, triggering the latent potential for indulgent set design and over-the-top costumes. Lot's of philosophical ideas about love/sex and the rule of law in this movie. The drugs on set were probably pretty good too.

Honey BooBoo has the Venus-Jupiter conjunction and wow, just wow, omg wow. She was recently lampooned on a south park episode who used her as a benchmark for our culture's apparent lack of discrimination and progressive "lowering the bar" of taste and decency. Interestingly the natal chart for America also has the Jupiter-Venus conjunction and it's in a tight square to Honey Boo-Boo's natal Jupiter-Venus conjunction. (No wonder the american flag is featured so often in bad taste.)

Both the exaggerated aesthetics and the theme of a cultural 'morality-trigger' are noteworthy in Honey Boo-boo's story and it's perhaps not ironic that her cartoonish personae was satirized on a cartoon TV show. The episode has been nominated for an Emmy.  Watch it @ southparkstudios

Aquarius Full Moon (ptII) - Aug 20

This is the second Full Moon in Aquarius and makes no significant aspects to other planets so it's going to be a short report. In some ways we will see a repeat of the stories, themes and feelings as the last full moon. This one is at the end degrees of Aquarius so it may "bleed over' or include features of the following house.  As always, most depends on your natal chart and what you have aspecting the latter degrees of Aquarius. Some may have eperienced the former Aquarius Moon as pleasantly social or exciting and this one may be decidedly stressful or boing.

Aquarius is about setting a foundation for the future and shining as a unique individual in the company of others. It's about aligning with those groups who share a world-view and build a new civilizaiton through cooperation, work and discipline to an ideal. That ideal can be anything from neo-royalism to the tea party to an book burning. It's not strictly about democracy or communism orsimply everything we associate with progressive ideals in the casual sense of the term.

Aquarius is ruled by Saturn (not Uranus) and as such rules the discipline of science. Uranus is experimental and is the promethean/pandorean fruits of technological advance but Saturn is the structure and rigor of scientific method. There is a difference! One enjoys the benefits of novelty and technological magic while the other works carefully and persistently to being it about into the world.

Capricorn, the other sign ruled by Saturn, preceeds Aquarius and is the principal of the cultural foundation. Capricorn is the old guard. Aquarius then is that part of us that is rigorous and structured in order to rebuild the foundations of culture and civilization (Capricorn) and take us into the future. What is new  will one day seem old and antiquated. What is novel and unqiue will one day be tried and true. The two become one. The union of heaven and earth.

All that said, Aquarius represents that critical and fixed aspect of the mind and communications. It is about ideas of social structure and in the more  mundane sense represents Friends and peer groups. Novelty (so long as it doesn't disrupt the social cohesion) and experimentation (as long as notes are taken) are both Aquarian themes and you may find them popping up in your life in some way during this time.

How is this effecting me?

How and where are we being forward-looking, humanitarian and scientific? Where might be a bit detached and aloof? Where do we like to unify with others and share in a common good and common goal? Where do we need to be more responsible in our communities and larger world?

Those most effected by this Full Moon will have planets near 28 Degrees Aquarius or the other  Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, scorpio). This includes those who have birthdays around the 15th-22nd of Febuary, May, August and November.

This Full Moon is on the cusp, so you may find it useful or interesting to look at the interpretation for your own rising sign as well as that which comes AFTER.

Where this Full  Moon occurs in your chart will reveal what area of life will be effected, changed or challenged. For this you will need to look to your RISING sign.  If you don't know your rising sign you can calculate with the free rising sign calculator at Cafe Astrology. : Rising sign calculator.

Leo New Moon + Jupiter Opposition Pluto

Venus and Mars have just aligned in the sky and although they are a weak due to being in the sign of their detriment (Virgo & Cancer) it will be the case that love is in the air for some of us at this New Moon in Leo, a sign that "loves to love" and is known for magnanimity and warmth. Philia or "fondness" is the love of Leo. It's the kind of love we have for people we admire as in the case of a child's love of a hero. It's that shining, honorable love. A love worth fighting for.

Leo's Love
The light side of Leo shines this kindness and love. Here Leo becomes the center of attention because she/he is so giving of attention and generousness of it's soul. As the sun  gives and gives and life grows because of it so too does the light of Leo shine. This can come in the form of popularity or charisma as well as a strong creative impulse. The dark side of Leo is the autocrat and egomaniac who needs constant reassurance of it's greatness in the form of praise and attention. This side of Leo has a pride that becomes a liability and a faith in oneself that becomes hubris.

New Moon Initiations
Like the last New Moon this phase is aligned with Uranus the trickster and 'mad-scientist' of the planetary family so there will be a tinge of excitement and unpredictability with this period and whatever is initiated here. Unlike the last new moon, this period is in a harmonious alignment to Uranus and the surprises and twists that come will be, for some, much easier to deal with. Excitement and stimulation rather than jarring upsets and sudden loss will be the flavor of the moment. For most this will simply seem like life is sped up for a moment which, although is a constant state in this day and age, will seem much different than the last New Moon which occurred during Mercury retrograde.

How to work the new moon

The New Moon is a great time for initiating creative ventures or projects that are "from the heart" as Leo rules the heart and our sense of soul or wholeness. Think of the Sun, the ruler of Leo, and qualities, narratives and meanings will start to pop out.  Courage will be either needed or easily at our disposal now in some area of life and some of us will have the opportunity to express our warmth and magnanimity towards the world.

Those with Sun/Moon/ascendant in Fixed signs (Taurus, Scorpio, Aquarius) will be challenged in this way and those with a predominance of Leo and fire signs (Aries,Sagittarius) are set free and feeling this period as energizing and exciting as they link up with Uranus in a positive way.

People with Leo rising will be strongly effected by this as this is their "New Moon" and after a period of their ruler the Sun moving through the hidden 12th house, this will feel like a coming out party. Leo Ascendant's may have been feeling like things have been slow to manifest or our vitality was a bit low for the past month of so, this is your time to shine. Strike while the iron is hot and make hay while the sun shines.

Jupiter Vs Pluto = Faith vs Power

Jupiter, now beautifully placed in Cancer, is opposite Pluto during this first part of August and will trigger some intense feelings regarding Jupiterian themes: Faith, philosophy, wealth, prosperity and growth. For some this will trigger obsessive or defensive emotions and reactions regarding their religion and philosophy, be it fundamentalist Christianity or Ayn Rand Atheism (neither good for a party). This may also be a sign of the powers-that-be using the state to squelch individual freedom and access to information.

Jupiter and Pluto are both associated with money and power especially when in combination together this could be a time when powerful people use trickery to consolidate wealth and amass huge profits. So basically I'm saying it will be business as usual and things will continue as they have been of late -though it could be a time of increased intensity on these issues. It's a part of a larger ongoing story which is an umbrella for  everything in the news today (Creeping police state, wealth inequality, individual liberty and privacy vs state spying, rampant corruption, ect, ect.

In our personal lives we might be especially passionate about an ideal or ideology to the point of obsession and we might really want to share our new found discovery of the "real ultimate truth" with all of our friends. You may feel like like proselytizing or preaching or attempting to convert. Just Don't. They don't want to hear about it. They do like you though and if you want it to stay that way you might just want to put a knee-high sock in it. And that's that! :()

How is this effecting me?

Where are we feeling (or needing) courage to shine? Where are we generous with ourselves and where do our hearts lead us? Where do we need to step into the spotlight? Where might we be autocratic and egotistical?

Where this New Moon occurs in your chart will reveal what area of life will be effected, changed or challenged. For this you will need to look to your RISING sign (aka Ascendant).  If you don't know your rising sign you can calculate with the free rising sign calculator at Cafe Astrology. : Rising sign calculator.

weekend lovers ▽ Venus Sextile Mars

Venus and Mars, the cosmic lovers,  are linking up this weekend, typically a great time for social, sexual and romantic activity. Typically. As Venus and Mars align in the sky they are in the signs of their debility, Virgo and Cancer. This combination lends less towards our erotic ideals and more towards vibrant and colorful afternoon in the garden or evening in the kitchen with your lover. Still for some it will be the just enough chemistry to make for a romantic, if a bit subdued, evening.

The catch is that Venus and Mars are both in "Fall", which is when they are in the opposite signs they are strongest and best expressed (Pisces and Capricorn, respectively) and so the usual verve will be a bit weaker than when in other signs.

Venus is thought to be ideal in Pisces and is where she is unconditionally loving to all with a compassionate heart that looks beyond the surface and sees a person's highest potential. It's Jesus/Mary vibes here.  Yes, it can be delusional at times and she has a tendency to try and play savior to underdogs. Venus in Virgo, however, is rather picky and a bit nervous when it comes to friendship, love and sex. This is the combination that lends to a person having a stringent list of what is acceptable and not acceptable in a mate. Venus here can be a bit neurotic here and is uptight where messy sex is involved.

Mars in Cancer can be a bit of a sissy and is more at home tending the kitchen stove than fanning the flames of love in a nightclub with a stranger.  Cancer is moody and defensive as a first resort and you can imagine how this might lend to courage in sexual adventurouness. There needs to be familiarity and a sense of safety for Mars to come out of it's shell here otherwise he is a bit hesitant.   When he's in Capricorn, his ideal roost,  he pays his dues and puts in overtime and doesn't whine a bit.  Here he loves to work almost as much as he likes to fuck and he really does like the latter. This is the sign of the horny goat. Alas in Cancer, he's less the strong-man and a bit more of a momma's boy.

So the two are getting together in signs they aren't the best in. Still it could be romantic and sexy, although  we may need to play to the themes of shyness or  moodiness. If we slow down and show our sensitive, prudent sides our dates or lovers might relax enough to get the blood flowing.

In some ways this won't be so overt. It could be a time when we want to have romantic times at home, outdoors and away from the rough and uncouth world outside. Keep it cozy, clean and safe and you might find this to be quite nice. Those hunting for a one night stand in a nightclub could get what they are after but there may be some vibes to deal with. Or just get drunk and don't even notice the vibes?

If you have Mars in Aries or Venus in taurus your nature won't be any different at this time but you may notice that things need to be handled with a bit more delicacy than usual. If it's noticiable it will come in the sense of circumstance or it might be within the person you are with. It's a subtle shift and will be most noticable if it's affecting your natal chart in a particular way. Otherwise it's a nice time for love, sex and social activity and the only noticiable difference is that the power of their combination will be diminished not unlike water in wine.

Those *best* effected will have Sun, Moon, Mars or Venus at 13◦ in Virgo, Cancer, Taurus & scorpio. Others with planets at 13◦ Gemini, Sagittarius, Pisces might have some akwardness or discomfor as the union of Mars & venus is in a difficult aspect to you.

Another catch
The Moon is Void-of-Course for a damn long time and there might be a feeling of standstill or inactivity. This is that period when the Moon doesn't make any aspects to other planets and the astral mechanics that work just beyond our awareness kinda slows. In example, it could be a time where someone tries calling or emailing you and it's not till later that it's received. Plans made in the moment might fizzle and there could be a missing spark. Another sign that you might like to be at home and in comfort rather than out.

The next time the these two get together again will be when Venus in Scorpio Squares Mars in Leo September 28. Mars is happy, if a bit dramatic in Leo and Venus is again in detriment and although this combination is combustive, it's MUCH more sexy.
