Mercury Direct!

Mercury is slowing down to go direct which, as I have mentioned, is one of the more tricky periods of the Mercury Retrograde process. It's all about speed with retrograde planets and the slower the stronger it's effects, though strong does not necessarily mean "Good" -or "bad". This is where Mercury appears to slow down to a stop where it hangs for a few days before slowly moving forward, retracing it's steps. So although your friends may be saying "mercury is direct" it's not really true until the 23rd and even then it's a process of gaining momentum, not a flip of a switch.

These few days where Mercury stops is when you really see bizarre reversals, miscommunication, mechanical malfunctions and errors of logic. What makes this one especially dramatic is that it's in a difficult square aspect to Uranus, the planet of surprises and sudden, drastic change. The combination of the two is explosive and especially weird but it can also lend to times where we are gifted with sudden insight and bright ideas though they may go against the grain of society in some way. If every there was a time to watch what you say and double check the safety straps on that rocket your are harnessing onto your very nervous chinchilla  this is that time.

Mercury Hangs at 13º Cancer from July 17 - July 24th. These are approximate dates and just like the changing of the seasons it happens on it's own timescale not ours. We apply our measurements to it not the other way around. That said, it's accurate enough to know when to hold em & know when to fold em (& Ect).

As always with these things you will most notice this transit if it is aspecting your natal chart. To know for sure you will have to have your chart read by an astrologer like me ;D. That said, we can see where Mercury Retro is effecting us generally by looking to see what house it's transiting through. To do that we need to look to our rising sign. To find out your rising sign go to the Rising sign calculator at Cafe astrology.

What good is astrology?

Astrology, like finance, entertainment, food and religion is a field that is full of bad information, hucksters, phonies and snake-oil salesmen. It's easy for skeptics to point out that Astrology and other forms of divination are practiced and followed by the delusional yet they forget that science too is full of these types of people. It is the human condition that makes it so -not the field, art of expterise in itself.

With the advent of "newspaper horoscopes" aka "sun sign astrology" this art has been diluted, dumbed down and overly-simplified. Much of the information available and the information passed around casually at cocktail parties is half-truths.  This misinformation and ghettoization of the art of Astrology leads people to the assumption that it is a form of 'fortune telling' where someone receives a fortune-cookie telling of one's fate and character. It is one-dimensional, without much beneficial use and does nothing to empower ourselves so that we may make better, more informed decisions about our lives, what we are doing and who we are doing it with. Other times it will give us false expectations of specific events which disregards our own creative ability to build our own world based on our own actions and beliefs.

Much as been said about the good of astrology so without re-inventing the wheel I offer you some insights...

"Astrology can be used to help you in many ways. It can reveal damaging behavioral patterns or forewarn you of upcoming challenges. It can help you pinpoint latent talents you may possess and provide you with specific hints on how to best develop them. Astrology can also point out expansive, rewarding trends that are coming up and assist you in figuring out how to take advantage of them before they fade. Finally, astrology is an excellent means to determine the perfect timing for certain actions." - cafe astrology: What can astrology do?

"I believe that astrology can, with impressive precision, predict the great questions that you will face in your life. It can accurately predict the timing of their emergence. It can, in wise hands, suggest good answers to those questions. It can warn you of limiting or destructive answers, and of tempting but ill-fated ones. But it can never, ever, accurately predict the answers you will give to those questions. That is in the domain of your freedom, your creativity, and your imagination. Your consciousness interacts unpredictably with the vast range of possibilities inherent in every archetypal field. A good astrologer is not so much a prophet as a coach. An astrological reading should leave you empowered, informed and encouraged, not just "described." -Steven Forrest

I find that author Mark Twain best summarized the subtle mysteries of this art when he said

"History does not repeat but it does rhyme"

When we know the rhyming scheme of a poem we can insert our own verses when it is time instead of letting fate, habit, predisposition or the will of others speak the verse for us. And while astrology is multivalient and sometimes multiple events or "verses" will occur with a particular astrological transit or natal configuration we still have the opportunity to add our own creativity into the mix.

It's the difference between performing a dance to a song we are familiar with  to suddenly flailing about as soon as the maestro starts conducting the symphony. Often the benefits are subtle and provide and "edge" but it is that edge that can make the difference between being winning and losing.

✚ New Moon In Cancer ♋ July 8th ✚

Diana Goddess of the Moon which rules Cancer
The Moon Goddess & Moon Child
The New Moon in Cancer is a time to reflect upon or deal with issues of emotional security, nurturing, motherhood and family. This part of life is generally thought as best expressed with gentle, secure and unpredictable lull of the warm summertime months but this new moon is more  unusual with the presence of Uranus and Retrograde mercury. But first let's look at Cancer to see what we are dealing with and how it's expressed. Scroll down to skip this if you just want the technical details of the new moon and what it might bring.

In terms of Astrotheology, this period (specifically summer solstice) is also when the sacrificial God (Osiris, Jesus, ect)  is killed and slips into the underworld where he will arise next spring. This metaphor describes the rise in length of daylight in summer and then the gradual decline into fall as the days get shorter after the solstice period. It also describes a kind of mourning of the Goddess, now a single mother,  and her developing one-on-one relationship with her child. note those keywords:  Mourning  & Child as they are keystones that relate to our own personal psychological relationship with these myths.

The Cancer glyph (♋) is a pair of breasts. This symbol represents that relationship dynamic initially between mother and child but it is often projected into other parts of life or into other relationships. It's where we might "baby" ourselves or others with nurturing, attention and "baby-talk" This can be seen in indulgent relationships, with people and also things such as food, comfort or security. It can also be seen in dignified areas such as in nurse-patient relationships (nursing is a term related to breastfeeding  which means "to feed" ).

It's also where we act like a children or are needy, clingy or dependent on emotional security. It's also where we might act like a Mother : Nurturing, caring, attentive and fond of feeding or sweet-talking those whom we fawn over. These qualities can be subtle and a  person might not exhibit them in an obvious way to others.Think of the buisness mogul who likes to have his breakfast a very particular way and acts like a little baby when it's not to his specificiations. Or the aggressive "tough-guy" who, behind the scenes, is very nurturing, sweet and attentive to this loved ones and family members.

Cancer The Crab

Cancer is one of the three water signs, each of which is  very sensitive to it's environment just as the surface of water is easily effected by disturbances. Even slight intrusions into the still water will cause ripples and greater intrusions create waves. This great sensitivity is managed with defense mechanisms that protect and separate inner and outer. Pisces is able to slip away but Scorpio and Cancer have hard outer shells. This shell is both protection and division between themselves and the collective. They absorb the emotions, thoughts and motivations of those around them and, at times, must retreat or aggressively defend their own sensitive, vulnerable core.

This will be expressed as nestling or hiding in between rocks or, as with the crab, a retreat into it's shell or burrowing into the sand. In human life when we are acting out our Cancer parts of our self we tend to be defensive and need to be in a familiar environment to feel comfortable. If disappointed, unhappy or insecure We may "go into ourselves' or "clam up" by socially withdrawing, brooding and indulging in our feelings.

Just like newborn babies, Cancer is not always nice and sweet. Like all signs it contains within it contradictory elements and there is a definite dark side to the sign of the moon-goddess. remember, the crab has both a hard shell and pinchers. Cancernians who tend to be moody and "Crabby" can be especially mean as their sensitivity lends to an awareness of other people's soft-spots and when the mood strikes them they can 'pinch' others with their unkindness. Yet most often this happens to people who are outside of their family as they tend to be clannish and protective of their familiars. Still, like little babies, cancernian types can be mean as sin.

Moodiness, as mentioned, is a big theme with Cancer which is a sign said to be "ruled" by the Moon which is where we get the term "Moody".  It's also where we get the term "loony" and Cancernian types tend to have a very silly, childlike sense of humor that can be absurd and weird qualities. Their ability to joke and be playfull will, like with all things, depend on their variable moods.

Moody, silly, needy, nurturing, caring and emotional. These are some important keywords for Cancer the sign of the Crab and the complex relationship between Mother and Child.

New Moon
The New Moon is just after midnight on the 8th of July but, like all New and Full moons,  we will see and feel it's influence just a few days before and after. Cancer is a cardinal sign meaning it "initiates" and gets things moving. This is can be seen in the symbology of the cardinal signs initiating the seasons Spring - Summer - Autumn & Winter.  Though Cancer is a part of our chart that might be cautious and protective (like a the mother) it is still about getting things moving and growing.

This part of our chart has been especially active with Retrograde mercury, Sun and Jupiter. Jupiter in Cancer, as written about in my previous article, has just entered for the first time in 12 years and it's beneficial and uplifting influence is just getting rolling.  For some there will be a strong urge to grow and expand in new ways yet things might be delayed somewhat and there may be a few turnarounds before we hit our stride and get our projects, relationships or lives heading in the direction we are hoping for. Be patient, Jupiter in Cancer brings rewards but at a steady, even pace.

Uranus throwdown

Uranus is the planet that signifies sudden, spontaneous change and liberation from previous conditions, is in a difficult aspect to the new moon and will add a jarring, exciting and electric element to this time period and while a few might enjoy it for many it will be an unwelcome feeling of friction in the area of our life where we like security, comfort and familiarity. But Uranus is the liberator and is pushing you out of your comfort zone or 'shell' in order to grow and fulfill your deepest potential. This liberation can be painful or exciting depending on your ability to accept change and throw yourself into new situations, relationships and circumstance. Since Cancer is about "being a baby" and Uranus is about liberty, you may find that you need to grow up in some area and let go of your 'security blanket" whatever it might be. It could be relationships, a job, Food, possessions, drugs, a home, lifestyle -any kind of HABIT or thing we clutch to. If we can let go on our own we might not have it taken away by circumstance and suffer as a victim.

Mercury Retro
mercury just went retrograde June 26th and will be conjunct the New moon bringing our attention to whatever Mercury is having us look back into or reflect upon. This is an excellent sign for reconnecting with family and friends  although there may be some snags with your cell service or skype account when reaching out. Give it a bit extra time and allow for weird communication issues.

For some there might be a confession or release of emotions that have been held back in some way. It might not be a deep, soulfull confession of love but it could be a call or text message form someone who you haven't heard from in a while. Read more on my article on Mercury Retrograde in Cancer.

While we may need to make headway, initiate and start moving forward with plans it's important to remember that Mercury will be retrograde for a few more weeks and while it might not be too problematic at the moment it will be more so when it stops to begin moving direct on July 20, just a few days before the Aquarius Full Moon. This period where Mercury slows down and begins to move forward is where things tend to be the most unusual and "weird". This one will be especially powerful because, like the New Moon,  it makes a difficult aspect to Uranus only the aspect is more exact and the jarring, unpredictable and surprising effects will be more acute. If you are hasty at the time of the new moon you could run into trouble around the time of the full moon later in the month. move ahead but go slow and steady.

Grand Trine
Running in the background of this time period is a rare grand trine between Saturn, Neptune and Jupiter who are each in a water sign and approx 120º from each other creating a large Triangle in the sky-map of the horoscope. This alignment is a dynamic interplay of harmony and "flow' existing between Saturn (Stability, structure, manifestation), Jupiter (growth, expansion, faith, philosophy) and Neptune (transcendental states, visions, collective consciousness). This will be a period where we can make stable yet far reaching changes in our individual and collective minds and worlds. This period could very well see shifts in consciousness, mass uprisings and scientific discovery that may help heal the world, oceans or bring us to a new understanding of our minds and consciousness.

How is this effecting me?

Where are you being challenged to grow up and stop being such a baby? Where are you being nurturing and with whom? Where is Mercury making you look back and reflect on the past? When will I stop asking questions and get to the point?

Where this New Moon occurs in your chart will reveal what area of life will be effected, changed or challenged. It is also where Jupiter will be expanding and helping you out.  For this you will need to look to your RISING sign.  If you don't know your rising sign you can calculate it here at Cafe astrology.  As always, this is an exceedingly brief look at what is going on for each rising sign and does not take into account a variety of factors that signify other evens in your life that can mitigate, exaggerate and modify these themes. Mercury Retrograde in Cancer ((Jun 25 - July 20))

Well if you needed an excuse for anything even things totally unrelated to Mercury,  here you go.  Next to that dang "supermoon" this is the most famous and generally misunderstood of all astrological cycles. Yes, it can be frustrating, maddening even but there are positive elements as well. No astrological cycle is inherently "bad". Unless you say so.

The next few days will be full of reversals, errors, delays and malfunctions but also reunions, recovery and revision of works or relationships that have been put on the back burner or neglected for a while. Because Mercury will be in Cancer, a water sign,  decisions may tend to be emotional rather than purely intellectual, empathy with others may be strong and fealings with family members especially mothers will be common for many.  Cancer is a sign concerned with emotional needs and feelings of security for some this will be their own feelings and for others they will be dealing with the feelings and emotional sensitivity of others. For some this will be a release of feelings through verbal expression which will be satisfying and for others it will be awkward, frustrating or embarrassing. Cancer can be sweet and compassionate but it can also be crabby, moody and irratable.  All depends on your natal chart and how it might be aspected at this time. Accept the slowdown and reversals and take time to reflect.

check out my previous blog on Mercury retrograde 101 which will set some things straight for this time period.

"A retrograde planet will effect you MOST when it is slowing down to the point where it appears to stop in the sky before going reverse or before switching forward again. Speed is more important than direction but forwards is still "better" than backwards only because it's going to stop and retrace it's steps.  As always, a planet stationing to go forwards or reverse will be making an aspect to one of your personal planets or points for it to be noticeable." more @ Mercury Retrograde & Direct 101

Mercury goes stationary retrograde at 23° Cancer just a few degrees shy from Venus. Mercury stays at this degree until the 28th and will begin to move back. From now till the 28th the weirdness of Mercury, as well as some it's charming capriciousness, will be strongest at this time. After that it will mellow out in general until it goes direct again and there will be another period of about a week where things will be buggin' people out.

July 9th Mercury will pass by the Sun at 17° Cancer. For those with Planets at 17° Aries, Libra or Capricorn could experience stress and frustration about miscommunication or delays. be careful about other people's feelings and try not to let your mouth inadvertanly burn any bridges.  Others with 17° of water signs might find it more pleasing but use caution when making agreements as the conditions may change. For some this might be a time when friends, lovers and family members come back for a visit after a period of absence. You might be surprised at just who shows up. I meet old friends I've not seen in some time during almost every Mercury retro period.

Mercury will go stationary Direct on Jul 20 and begin slowly moving forward over the next week as it gathers speed and gets to the process of retracing it's steps. Be especially carefully now as the stationary direct motion can be as wackadoodle as stationary retrograde. Again, it's the speed that's the sign of the times.

Caution will be thrown out the window for many of us as Mercury will be in an abrasive square aspect  to electric and unpredictable Uranus. That this aspect happens as Mercury stations to go direct notches up the fuck-up level to catastrofuck. While a FEW will love the crazymaking Mercury-Uranus square most will find it jarring at best. If ever there was a time to use caution with machinery, driving or expressing anger -this is it.

Underscoring the impulsivity of the stationary direct period: Mars and Jupiter conjunct during the stationary direct period, a time when we urgently desire to just the show on the freaking road already. While there will be the strong motivation of Fiery and impatient mars with fiery and enthusiastic Jupiter, the combination can lend to periods of accidents or emotional outbursts when we finally really lose our patience. Remember that, if you can.  Alas, you probably won't.

Jupiter In Cancer ♃ ♋ June 2013 - July 2014

Jupiter, planet signifying growth, abundance and hope (among other things) is ending it's year long transit through Gemini where it is in it's detriment and entering into Cancer where it is especially well placed or "exalted". This is excellent news for everyone especially those with planets in the sign of Cancer who will feel the grace of Jupiter in a very personal way for the first time in 12 years. It's passage through this sign has got a lot of people anticipating a time of positivity and there is even a facebook group devoted to this particluar cycle: Can't wait for Jupiter in Cancer group. Very much in line with Jupiter's hope and faith in things.

For the past year the promises of Jupiter has been a lot of Talk and not a lot of Action. As mentioned in the previous article on Jupiter in Gemini,  Jupiter was in it's "detriment"during it's year long course through the sign of the twins which debilitated, weakened state when a planet is residing in the sign opposite the sign they rule signifying that they are "away from home" or out of their element. In Gemini when Jupiter is doing it's best it isn't that great and when it's doing it's worst, it's especially problematic.

Jupiter
Jupiter is growth and in ancient times when crops were good it growth meant wealth and if we were lucky enough to be born into position of power growth meant a happy and prosperous kingdom which meant more power for the king. So in  away Jupiter is also wealth, prosperity, joy and the faith that things will prosper and increase. It's important to remember the theme of faith and hope with Jupiter.

Often people are disappointed when Jupiter transits occur as their hopes are high that something totally amazing will happen. Yet often the transit represents the hope and Faith that something great will happen rather than the thing itself. Hope and faith are important qualities but without hard work, discipline and sobriety (read: Saturn ♄)  then our hopes will just be bubbles in the air. Formed easily and popped just as quick.

Jupiter is inflation and excess. When our hopes are too high we take risks we wouldn't normally take, spend money we don't really have or make promises we can't actually keep. So the condition of Jupiter and the kinds of aspects it's making to your birth chart signify where we might be going overboard and where we might be in a time of opportunity for expansion, joy and feelings of optimism. Jupiter in the signs of it's rulership: Sagittarius and Pisces, are powerful but they can bring both the best and worst from the sign. When Jupiter is in cancer, however, it is exalted meaning "highly placed" and it's effects are balanced and tempered. Not too much and not too little.

Cancer ♋
Cancer's glyph depicts a woman's breasts or the breasts of the goddess, rather. The breasts and the mother figure represent the caring, nurturing and protecting of the child much like a careful and tender cancernian Crab is protected by it's shell. The sign Cancer is ruled by the Moon and the Moon represents change as it is constantly moving and always changing shape. Not just erratic sudden change (that's Uranus) but steady, continuous change. Since the moon  "grows and shrinks" it represents growth, just like Jupiter.

So, Since Jupiter represents hope and expansion it grows and expands steadily and carefully while in Cancer. The faith and hope is tempered with caution and a kind of tenacity that Cancer is famous for. Tenacity, by the way, means "getting a grip" on a thing as in a crab gripping something with it's claws. It might be a bit clumsy at first  but once it's got a grip on something it is hard for someone else to break it loose.

Cancer is also the sign of the home and family. This can be metaphorical in the sense of where we are comfortable or who we feel as familiar but it can also literally mean where you live, your family, epseically  mother and children. Venus represents cash and gifts but Jupiter represents wealth in the sense of goods, property, businesses and things that generate revenue. So when Jupiter was in Gemini the wealth was seen to be coming in through abstracts, promises to pay, ideas, intellectual property. But with Jupiter in Cancer the wealth is "in the home". The cupboards and pantry are full, money is in a shoebox under the bed, the home is filled with goods and nice, durable things.

...At least this is how it plays out on a symbolic level -it's not that everyone is just going to turn into homesteaders with gold and silver doubloons and storehouses filled with organic, non-GMO grains and vegetables. But I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see a big shift in our collective values over the next year as we already are. I think we will see critical mass in the collective's perception about true wealth.

When Jupiter aspects your birth chart the benefits could be from family or reasonable, long term investments. For people with Capricorn rising Jupiter will be transiting your 7th house of Partnerships and the people who you partner up with may feel like family or be especially nurturing and caring for you, for those with Jupiter in the 4th house your home life will be especially pleasant and you might move to a larger home or you could benefit from your family. Sometimes this will be benefit in the sense of wealth but other times it will be in the sense of wellbeing and optimism for the future which comes from the family.

Where is it effecting meeEee!?!?

Where Jupiter transits in your chart will reveal what kind of benefits might be in store for you.  Generally speaking Jupiter in a particular house is where things will be easier, more opportunities will come, faith will be enhanced and growth can occur. Whenever life is hard you can lean on Jupiter to enjoy yourself a bit more.

For this you will need to look to your RISING sign.  If you don't know your rising sign you can calculate it here: href ="http://www.cafeastrology.com/ascendantcalculator.html">Cafe Astrology: Rising sign calculator. As always, this is an exceedingly brief look at what is going on for

Remember, It's most strongly felt when it aspects planets or points in your birth chart. Those most strongly effected with have Cardinal rising sign: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn but in particular Cancer rising. Those with Sun and moon in Cancer will also be strongly effected at some point in the next year. Jupiter takes 12 years to transit the zodiac so it it's touching your sun or moon then make the most of it because it won't be happening again soon.
