Mars Retro Pt II - What are you fighting for?

I was inspired to say a bit more about this Mars Retro period we are entering into. Sometimes the best way to look at these things is with a simple motto, so I will try to keep it simple that way.

Mars is our fighting spirit, what we fight for and the qualitative nature of how we fight.

When problematic, Mars attacks preemptively with vengeance and selfish anger. It's mean, petty and takes pleasure in destruction. It burns, cuts and breaks. It takes to the attack and becomes like it's opposition. Violence begets more violence.

Other times a problematic Mars, a weak Mars will not even fight at all and allow to be dominated and overcome without struggle for independence or standing up for one's boundaries.

During this phase we have a chance to look at our Martial nature and rethink our strategy, and react or respond in new ways.

Ask yourself "what am I fighting against?" and then ask yourself "what am I fighting For?"

If you are fighting against something you are fighting to fight and you are fighting for violence. In big ways and in small ways, inside and outside. Are you fighting for the right things in your life? Take care and choose your battles wisely, you may win.  What then?

And If you aren't standing up for something you are laying down and allowing the problems in your life and in the world around you to persist. Do people in your life need you? Does the world?

Have courage. Remember that courage doesn't mean lack of fear but persisting in spite of it.

Mercury Direct & Pisces New Moon - Feb 28

Pisces, the sometimes weird and deeply feeling sign of dreams and fantasy is brought to our attention for a moment as the Sun and Moon come to their annual conjunction here. Pisces can be hard to figure out, confusing and mysterious even to it's natives. It's changeable and even capricious to delight of the highly mutable and frustrating to everyone else who just wants them to come down to earth and pick up the phone.

It's changeability and slipperiness is highlighted by the stationary direct motion of Mercury and the stationary Retrograde change up with Mars and Saturn. As I have said before the most noticeable moments in a retrograde phase are when they make aspects to your birth chart and when they slow down and stop before moving forwards or reverse. Even more powerful, aggravating or delightful are when the planets make aspect to your birth chart as they stop in the stationary period. This means that they will aspect you for not only a day or so (depending on the planet) but several days or even weeks with the outer planets like Saturn and Neptune.

Having three planets go stationary at the same time is a bit rare and that it occurs at a new moon is a sign of major shifts and changes in our worlds. Luckily for us the New Moon is very nicely angled to Jupiter in Cancer and Pluto in Capricorn. The aspect to Jupiter is a sign of abundance, goodwill, optimism and high spirits although it can also lead to excess and overkill, something to keep in mind as pisces, ruled by Jupiter, can get out of hand and overdo things especially regarding alcohol or relationships with poor boundaries. The aspect to Pluto is a sign of regeneration, evolution and perhaps potentiation for those with Pluto aspecting their natal chart at the moment.

More tricky than these two benevolent aspects is that the New Moon will be very close to Neptune the planet of fog and confusion, considered to be the modern ruler of Pisces by some 'new-age' astrologers. They certainly do share some commonality and both represent fantasy, dreams, visions and spiritual ideals. This is well and good but Neptune and the other outer planets, Uranus & Pluto, are powerful, disruptive and require very special handling and a certain sense of sobriety.

Considering Jupiter is in a close Trine to the New Moon this will be especially important to consider. Are you dealing with reality? Are you bringing your dreams to earth? Are you letting the important bits slip through your fingers? Keep at attention in this time and make the most of the spiritual themes or feelings of goodwill that may come up.

Mercury going Direct is something that people get excited about but just because it's starting to go direct doesn't mean we are out of the woods yet, especially with this potentially confusing and inspiriting New Moon. Bear in mind that the tricks and reversals and mechanical fuckery of God of thieves and magicians is still in effect and that it doesn't just "switch off" like a lightswitch. These things are like seasons and they come and go on their own time. Give it a new days at least.

Not only is Mercury going to need a few days before he is up  to speed but Mars and Saturn are going Retrograde as well. my report on Mars retro is here.

Take time to feel things out and listen to intuition. Make sure the call you are hearing isn't that of a siren who lures sailors to their misfortune.  I, myself, will be careful about making any sudden leaps of faith and major moves. Give it time no matter how excited and inspired you may feel about your life, relationships or projects.

How does the New Moon effect me?
How does the New Moon effect me?
Where are things going to be inspiring, dreamy, defying boundary and definition? Where might things be too good to be true? Or truly good? Where are we initiating a new cycle with the compassionate and deeply feeling part of ourselves?  What part of life is going well but perhaps requiring more focus and realistic awareness?

Where this New Moon occurs in your chart will reveal what area of life will be effected, changed or challenged. Mars Retrograde

A new Moon in Pisces approaches and just about 24hrs later Mars, Mercury and Saturn will go stationary direct, apropos of the Piscean tendency to changeability and indecisiveness.  Many will take a sigh of relief to know that Mercury is going direct and as many will face-palm the fact that Mars is going retrograde.

While this can indeed be a frustrating time you need not worry as all retrograde cycles are natural rhythms of nature and can come with silver lining. Venus retro can be times when we revisit friends or get a deal on some new shoes. Mercury retro can be times when we find something lost or overdue paperwork is finished up. Mars Retro can be times when get off the fence or start going back to the gym. It might seem like it's taking forever to get in shape but at least you are returning.

Remember, It's not the retrograde motion that signifies problems as much as planets in detrimental signs making aspects to your natal planets. Even then it's not enough to signify a major crisis.

Retrograde Periods
Planetary retro periods are sometimes considered "weak" or alternatively "strong" but with a sense of reversal or mischief, depending on the sources. It seems both can be true and that the essence of it all requires some flexibility of awareness on our part, a flexibility that is difficult to pin down with simple terminology.

Retro periods can certainly feel "weak" at times and this feeling can be the impetus for us to overcome the feeling and act out to change the circumstance or feeling we are living with.

In example, with Venus retrograde we can feel unloved or alienated. This in turn can be a time where we act out to reverse the feeling by dating someone who we have previously been with or falling for someone very different, inappropriate or unavailable. Eventually we realize this person isn't good for us or that we broke up with them for a reason that is still impossible to ignore and the "weak" period is now "strong" and takes up all of our attention and energy.

by the way, Weak and strong don't necessarily mean good and bad. It's about activity and our investment of awareness. Was it 'good' when you started dating that douchebag and felt attractive and powerful or was it 'good' when you broke up with him when he threw your phone into a bar-b-que for texting your ex-boyfriend?

Anyways, remember that all this terminology can get in the way very easily and it never replaces experiential understanding.

Mars Retro
So, what can we expect from Mars retro periods? Well, as Venus is love and beauty, Mars is war and willpower so expect that  our ability or willingness to assert ourselves or take action may seem subdued, wrongly expressed or require special handling.  Likewise, this may be a time when we express what has been subdued in the past or when we finally feel the bravado to express our vitality with a sense of openness.

At times some of us may feel like we can't or shouldn't assert ourselves, take action or stand up for something or we may simply not be aware that our own needs are being dominated by another. Eventually a line is crossed and we take up arms and sometimes  overreact or come on too strong in order to balance things out. In the wake of our outburst we might burn bridges, cause rifts, or disruptions that require backstopping to fix.

Other times we may simply not fight at all.  'Fighting' can mean getting out of bed at 7am to work out or telling the neighbors to turn down their music so you can sleep and not go into work all grumpy and take it out on your boss,  get fired and then, in despair, get drunk and drive your car through a sacks 5th avenue window that jumped out in front of you from nowhere.

Sublimation = Eruption. This sublimation then sudden eruption is another Mars retro thing to watch out for. Sometimes we keep anger wound up within our gutty-works and it comes out through the seams, sometimes bursting open altogether, and then it's a 45min trip back to Ikea to get a brand new new beanbag. or bönaväska, or whatever.

The key to it all: we fight the wrong people, the right people for the wrong reason or fight for our rights the wrong way.  But not if we maintain a sense of awareness of this time and stay present even when other people are inappropriately trying to pop our beanbags.

Timeframe

Mars will be moving through the sign of Libra, it's detriment, meaning it's negative qualities of this time will tend to be more problematic when it aspects our planets particularly those within the sign of Cancer and Capricorn. The negative traits in libra can be indecision or passivity when activity is required or passive aggressiveness  in social situations.

Mars, already slowing down, will stop in it's stationary period around March 1st and will begin moving  backwards through the sign of Libra until May 20th. Although Mars goes direct in late may it will stay in Libra until July 27th when he bursts out of the delicate and peaceful sign of Libra into his home territory of Scorpio. This ingress into the sign he rules will begin a new phase when the Martial types (those with predominance of Aries or Scorpio) will finally feel like they are making headway with their ambitions and can operate with the fullness of their intensity and enthusiasm without the problematic blowback of Mars retro in Libra.

VENUS DIRECT (13º Capricorn)

After a long absence and twisting, turning adventures (Uranus currently squaring my natal Moon), I'm back to blogging and just in time for Venus to stop it's retrograde motion and slowly return to it's forward direction, a situation which has made tangles out of a great many panties.

The love-Goddess has been touring through the realistic and practical  sign of  Capricorn since early November going stationary retrograde just a few degrees shy of Aquarius on December 22nd. She's coming to another standstill and will begin moving forward again in the coming days, finally leaving Capricorn for the more social and experimental sign of Aquarius on March 6th.

It's these "stationary" points that are most significant in a planetary retro cycle and the days surrounding it's stand-still in the sky are powerful times and will be very noticeable for those who have planets in alignment with the degree in which Venus stops in the sky. So although technically she goes direct on the 1st of February she will be at her 'stationary degree' of 13º Capricorn from Jan 27 to February 4th and even then she will be at 14º for 4 days (before and after Feb 1) rather than her usual 2 days per degree. So don't eat that whole box of chocolates just yet.

When considering the power of a transit it's important to remember that it's not so much the motion of a planet but it's speed. These slow times for a planet are especially powerful.

What does it all mean?
There is a lot of unnecessary fear regarding Retrograde cycles. While it's true that  it can be especially difficult and confusing (depending on various factors) it's also a time when friends and lovers from your past return, or when we get a second chance to bury the hatchet with someone who makes a better ally than enemy.

I have found the Venus retrograde cycle to be a great exercise in non-attachment with Venusian themes of Love, money and beauty but particularly sexual and love relationships. The retrograde cycle involves a change of direction and in relationships there is often a change or reversal of some kind. If we can remain both open hearted and open handed by not grasping, naming or controlling the situation we can enjoy the unusualness without any suffering or, at least, less suffering than if we were ignorant of the times.

Venus is both love and our desires for love and affection. Often during the retrograde cycle our desires and values of love and beauty are not as normal. This means we will be attracted to people and relationships that are not what we would normally desire for any number of reasons. Sometimes we weren't attracted to them before or they are unavailable or we just know the person isn't right for us -and yet we are drawn in.  Often this is a mutual drawing in of two people. By the time the cycle is over we wake up wondering what happened.

Remember the inverse is true as well. We can be repelled by people whom we later find to be great matches for us be they friends or lovers. The key is that our values and perceptions of others are "off" and not to be trusted. Remember this too when we experience slights or offense from friends and peer groups. Take it in stride if we feel neglected or unappreciated as the experience will pass and may be less real than we interpret. If we make a stink about it we could cause an actual problem out of nothing. Don't be a stinker.

also keep in mind that Venus rules cosmetics, hair, clothing, luxuries and gifts. These things can also be unusual and it's not the best time for a make-over.

The Tantalus Factor
Another common experience is what I call the "tantalus factor" and it's enough to make a lady claw her weave out. Tantalus is a mythological character who, having offended the Gods, was punished by being buried up to his neck with water and fruit just out of his reach. Each time the water would come near his lips it would recede away and his thirst would remain unquenched. Here he is below. Sucks to be you, Tantalus.

This kind of teasing, tantalizing and frustrating experience is very common with Venus retrograde cycles and being aware of it can reduce our suffering greatly. It can manifest in any number of ways be it someone who is luring us on without intention of consummating our desires or in the case of someone who returns our affection but is unable to express the feeling due to moving away or being tied up in the process of a break up.

The key factor is that there is some kind of information that is not being told, seen or understood. This information or realization will come at some point during the retro cycle often at the end) and our feelings about the relationship or person will change. Eventually another shoe will drop or a skeleton will come out of the closet, changing the dynamic and causing us to rethink things.

If you feel attraction to someone who might be different than what you are normally attracted to around the time of Venus stationing to go Retrograde then it's very likely that this person or relationship will be simply tantalizing or there will be a mutual realization that you aren't a match. If it's an ongoing relationship there may be a slow-down, love may fizzle or someone may withdraw and rethink things.

The lover Returns
Although it can still be tantalizing, one way a Venus retro cycle can possibly be consummated without  frustration is when a lover or suitor from our past returns. If we had a connection with someone and the line got cut for some reason, we may get a second chance. The person may call you up, you could literally  bump into them on the street or they may become roommates with a good friend of yours. I've experienced each of these personally. Whatever the circumstance,  the cat comes back.

At times it will be a person whom we had a serious relationship with and this person may call or write expressing feelings of longing or love. Certainly, we ourselves might be the person calling, writing or pining for a lost love. This can be multiplied by various factors: An ex whom grosses you out to the max might call you up while you are writing a letter to a the dream boat who you can't get over and are suddenly reminded of. Sometimes our reminiscing will involve a 'rose-colored tint' to our memories causing us to forget about the problematic or unattractive elements of a person or relationship and we may reunite only to break up again when we realize and re-experience the ugly truth and handsome prince charming goes back into being the usual shirt-cocking toad of a scrotum.

If in a relationship we may experience the re-ignition of both love and problematic areas of our relationship. Issues that have settled into the background for the time being might resurface and get dealt with during this time. The dealing of this issue could itself rekindle feelings of intimacy and love and if insurmountable it could be the end of a relationship. If you are sitting on the fence about a relationship, this cycle will push you off and signal a time of action.

Respect
As you can see, perception and it's fallibility is a big part of the retrograde cycle. It's also the key of planetary alignments which we term "aspects" which means, literally, "to see". Spect = to see;  spectator, spectacles, inspect or spectrum. It's all about sight and perception.

In the case of Venus retrograde it's about looking again at the people in our lives and our values around love and desire. To look again means, literally,  "respect".

Respect is not "like". We like people whom we are "alike", people with whom we share values with. We can like someone without respecting them and we can respect someone we don't like.  we even respect things we fear such as fire, or the ocean. We may look away for a moment but unless we "look again" we can be burnt or swept out to sea.  Love is a thing to respect. The hearts of other people deserve your respect.

Respect also means "to return the gaze" as in 'eye contact'. When we respect someone we acknowledge them by looking at them or returning their gaze.   In life we may encounter people we don't like or who we find unattractive, socially retarded,  bad dancers, ect. This Venus retro cycle is a time when we can go back and look again the people in our lives with whom we have had contempt and give them respect as human beings even if they aren't like us. While seemingly insignificant it is an opportunity to expand our awareness and make allies with people who we had previously shrunk away from.

I suggest you respect this cycle of natural time by taking a second look at your friends and lovers and at your values. Remain non-attached to outcomes, accept the love that comes your way and love freely without expectation. Refrain from firm commitments be they joining or separating and let the process unfold over the coming weeks.

With respect and regards!

-Ian

Scorpio New Moon Solar Eclipse - Nov 3

It's eclipse time again and the winds of change are blowing, changing and re-arranging our lives, relationships, habits and worldviews.

Like all eclipse cycles, the changes, feelings and challenges signified by the eclipse can be felt many days or even weeks before and after the actual fact. So although the eclipse actually occours on November 3rd at 5:49 Am PDT it will actually be playing out in a much larger window or 'umbrella' of time. If you get hung up on the exact timing of New/Full moons and eclipses you can miss the boat, so to speak.

New Moons are initiating and full Moons culminate things, stories, relationships, ect. Use this time to initiate a new phase wherever this Elicpse falls in your chart. As always, much depends on how this cycle is aspected to your natal chart and other time cycles running in the background.

SCORPIO
Scorpio is the sign relating to the alchemical process of  putrification, that important stage that seperates the poison from the medicine or the lead from the gold. Virgo separates, Libra balances and Scorpio Eliminates. Slash and burn. This is the shadow of Taurus who is the principal of fecundy and fertility.

However it's the needed elimination process that allows for a regeneration, ressurection and revival. This Phoenix phase of Scorpio is much more appealing for most, particularly Scorpio types who can be rigid and unielding like all the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo and Aquarius included).  This dichotomy of holding on and letting go is an important theme to keep in mind right now or all the time if you or someone in your life is strongly Scorpionic.

Let go, sacrifice and surrender. New life will rush into the empty space you have created.

Mercury Retro & Direct
Mercury has been retrograde in scorpio so during this time we may be dealing with scorpionic themes and people from our past who have popped back into our lives in the past weeks. For some this will be the neccisary clarity that allows us to drop whatever is holding us back and finally move forward. Mercury will go stationary Direct (It's most powerful and weird time) November 11th. The stationary period lasts several days before and after that date so be mindfull of the process and double check everything from paperwork, communications and battery life on your cell phone.

Venus in Capricorn - Retrograde in December
Venus moves into Capricorn November 5th untill March! This extended stay is due to her Retrograde cycle starting around the Full Moon in December. Capricorn deals with caution and playing by the rules. You may want to hold back from carelessly jumping into relationships right now as Venus Retro can be a bit of a let down when initiating new relationships. It's not to say they won't work out but they won't always go as planned. For some it will be a time of disspointment and a bit of a dry spell in matters of Love. It's still a month away but a stage is being set. You may want to avoid getting into trouble by being patient and cautious like a good Capricorn. More on this later...

happy full Moon Eclipse in Aries / Hiatus

I'm traveling and in the mix of the full Moon and have no time to write, I'll be back soon with a review of the Full moon which will stay in effect over the following weeks as it's an eclipse and the time range for Eclipses are much larger than regular new/full moons. I hope it's going well for all.

Libra New Moon

Libra, the peacemaker and socialite of the Zodiac tends to avoid confrontation and disharmony unless it seems absolutely necessary to hang up the phone, put down the cocktail,  get off the fainting couch  and rush into the fires to regain harmony and equanimity.

This is one of those times when we need to march on in the face of turbulence and change in our lives and find that still point within ourselves and come to a state of balance.

PLUTO VS URANUS
For the past several years there has been an ongoing dance between Pluto and Uranus signaling a time of a great epoch of change, disruption, crisis and hopefully, liberation. Pluto represents power, secrecy, regeneration and resurrection. Uranus on the other hand represents rebellion, personal liberty, eccentricity, sudden change and technology. Both planets can represent both good and evil or 'things we like and things we don't like' and sometimes both negative and positive qualities can be expressed at the same time on different levels.

Since these two came into alignment in 2010, the whole world has been rocked with collapse, revolutions, radicalism and explosiveness culturally and literally. And it's only just getting started. The great Recession, Occupy wall st, Fukishima, NSA spying, meteor strikes, political revolutions, riots, terrorism, dub step music and rampant corruption just about everywhere and anywhere. And now the American Government is shut down, just on the heels of this New Moon aligned to the natal chart of the USA.

All this feels like a critical mass or peak as the New Moon "triggers" the ongoing Uranus-Pluto Square. The New Moon is opposite Uranus and Square Pluto creating what is known as a "T-Square" an aspect pattern of tension and instability. It is like a table with only three legs. The area of instability is wherever the 'missing leg' would be. In this case it's the sign of Cancer which is significant to America as the Natal chart of the US has Sun, Venus and Jupiter in Cancer right in the orb of influence of this conflagration. (see image as visual aid of this phenomenon)

There is another dimension to this time period in which we are likewise triggered or effected, emotionally, socially and psychically (mentally). In our personal lives we may be feeling tense, neurotic, anxious, pent up, angry and crazy. Crisis is brewing somewhere for almost everyone. Like all things, this too shall pass but keep in mind it's when these feelings are brought to the surface that we are able to deal with them and put them to bed, once and for all -that's one of the gifts of Pluto. Use it.

Not everyone will have such a hard time but it should be rather exciting, unconventional and intense on some level. Things initiated now have this "time-stamp" of volatility, power and unpredictability and this may prove tricky for initiating romantic relationships (major Libra theme) unless you are strong and flexible enough to roll with the punches. It might not seem relevant now but these things have a way of slowly growing into something to be reckoned with.  To be sure you need to have your chart read by a professional to see just exactly how all this is effecting you.

The new moon leads up to the powerful Full Moon Eclipse in Aries. If you aren't feeling a bit crazy yet just give it somewhere between later today and 14 days from now.  The Eclipse should be just as pivotal if not more so and the effects of Eclipses can be felt days and weeks in advance. Some may notice it already.

Those most effected by this New Moon will have planets or points between 8-13 Degrees cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn).

How does the Full Moon effect me?
Where are we needing to find balance during these exciting and dramatic times? Where are new areas of life being initiated amongst the turbulence? Where should we find or work to achieve truce, peace and harmony in life?

Where this New Moon occurs in your chart will reveal what area of life will be effected, changed or challenged.
